Why do you need an AED?

Below are some alarming statistics to consider about cardiac arrests in New Zealand and the critical importance of having access to an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Current Cardiac Arrest Statistics

The NZ Herald has reported that DHBs are seeing an almost doubled rate of heart attacks, and a drop in survival of community cardiac arrests of 30% down to 10%.

In Australia, the State of Victoria is seeing 20% more cardiac arrests today than in 2019.

Survival Rates

  • Only 1 in 4 Kiwis who suffer from cardiac arrest make it to hospital alive
  • Only 11% survive 30 days after being discharged
  • A person's chance of survival drops 10-15% for every minute cardiac arrest goes by without CPR or defibrillation using an AED

The Impact of AED Availability

  • If no AED is available, an untreated victim's chance of survival is only 5%
  • If an AED is available, then the chance of survival is about 24% (almost 5 times more likely)
